The president of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales, asserts the island as the natural setting for one of the world’s most important races

Carolina Darias, the mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, highlights that The North Face Transgrancanaria attests to the capacity and leadership of both public institutions and private companies

The 25th edition of The North Face Transgrancanaria is set to go. From February 21st to 25th, Gran Canaria will host one of the world’s most significant ultra-distance races, with 4,100 participants from 74 countries across five continents.

The official presentation of The North Face Transgrancanaria took place this Wednesday in a press conference attended by the president of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales; the Sports Councilor of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Aridany Romero; the Tourism Councilor of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Carlos Álamo; the Industry Councilor of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Minerva Alonso; the mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Carolina Darias; and the CEO of Arista Eventos, Fernando González.

Antonio Morales, the president of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, emphasized that The North Face Transgrancanaria serves as a platform to showcase “Gran Canaria’s territory, landscape, customs, and traditions” to the world. He also highlighted it as an example of the partnerships between public and private institutions to promote the island and sports.

Morales pointed out that this event combines “three essential elements”: promoting sports as a means of social cohesion, health, and projecting the island through sporting achievements; tourism, as last year’s event generated an economic return of 16 million euros and will once again be promoted in magazines, specialized media, and social networks outside the islands, thus diversifying the island’s tourist offer; and thirdly, he highlighted and thanked this year’s event slogan, Kilometer 0, as it allows projecting food sovereignty through the brand Gran Canaria Me Gusta, which will be present at the finish line in Parque Sur in Maspalomas.

Meanwhile, the mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Carolina Darias, acknowledged that hosting the start of the Classic race is “an honor” for the city, which this year will be a part of the World Trail Majors circuit, “in an ideal setting like the sand of the best urban beach in the country, which will fill the city with color on February 23rd with over 800 registered participants”.

Darias emphasized that The North Face Transgrancanaria attests to the capacity and leadership of public institutions and private companies to organize top-level international events. Thus, the mayor of the capital of Gran Canaria highlighted the municipal services that will allow the Classic to take place on the night of February 23rd. “Sport is economy, restoration, hospitality, and life, and life is health”, she concluded.

The next edition of The North Face Transgrancanaria, which will once again have the support of the American company as the main sponsor, is expected to feature the best athletes in this discipline. Stars like Courtney Dauwalter, Zach Miller, Katie Schide, Shen Jiasheng, Azara García de los Salmones, Andreas Reiterer, Claudia Tremps, Andreu Simon, Fernanda Maciel, or Robert Pkemoi will compete in one of the five races that make up the event: Classic, Marathon, Advanced, Starter, Promo, or Vertical Kilometer. Additionally, the Advanced and Vertical Kilometer races will be part of the Canary Islands Mountain Federation circuit.
