Antonio Morales, President of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, expressed his pride in hosting a new edition of an “extraordinary” race that continues to break records
Carolina Darias, Mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, highlighted the importance of an event that is “not only one of the best sporting events in the world but also an engine for the economy and for dreams.”
The island of Gran Canaria is set to become the prestigious stage for The North Face Transgrancanaria, which celebrates its 27th edition starting this Wednesday with more than 6,000 runners. Once again, the eyes of the world will be on the landscapes of Gran Canaria thanks to a race that stands out among the most prestigious on the planet.
The official presentation took place this Monday at the impressive Gran Canaria Arena. The event was attended by Antonio Morales (President of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria), Carolina Darias (Mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria), Aridany Romero (Sports Councilor of the Cabildo), Carlos González (Director of The North Face Transgrancanaria), Elena Álamo (Acting Mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana), Abraham Martínez (Head of MICE at Lopesan Hotel Group), and Javier Otero (Manager of Hospitales Universitarios San Roque Las Palmas).
Antonio Morales described the race as “extraordinary,” noting the record-breaking figures: “Over 6,000 runners from 75 different nationalities are arriving in Gran Canaria. 30% are women—a significant female participation—and 40% are international athletes. Tourism diversity takes on a new dimension with an activity like this,” he added.
Carolina Darias highlighted the iconic start of the ‘Classic’ modality at Las Canteras Beach, one of the island’s most spectacular spots. She emphasized the “public-private partnership” that makes the race possible, calling it “a driver of the economy and hope” for the island. Aridany Romero praised the passion of the Arista Eventos team, acknowledging the work of the “visionaries” who started this race over 20 years ago.
Carlos González, Director of the race, appealed to the sense of identity surrounding the event: “Transgrancanaria is many things: sport, sustainability, awareness, and knowledge of our heritage. It is a world-class race for elites and amateur runners alike; it is part of our identity.”
The event also saw support from Elena Álamo, who stated that San Bartolomé de Tirajana is ready to welcome runners at the finish line, and from key sponsors. Abraham Martínez (Lopesan Hotel Group) highlighted the pillars of excellence, sustainability, and the future (with the Kids category), while Javier Otero (Hospitales Universitarios San Roque) expressed pride in being the official medical service for a race that promotes effort and responsibility.
The starting gun for The North Face Transgrancanaria 2026 will be fired this Wednesday with the Kilómetro Vertical El Gigante. The challenge begins at 15:30 from the Agaete Valley, marking the start of an edition that promises to be historic due to record participation and the world-class trail running stars in attendance.
