The event will reward the first Canarian female runner in the TGC Classic with a medical check-up for the prevention of breast and gynecological cancer.

Registrations are still available on the official race website www.transgrancanaria.net, with several of its categories close to being fully booked.

The next edition of The North Face Transgrancanaria will demonstrate its commitment to breast cancer prevention, a disease diagnosed in over 30,000 people in Spain every year, making it the most common tumor among women. Therefore, on the occasion of World Breast Cancer Day, the organization and San Roque University Hospitals will reward the first Canarian female runner in the TGC Classic category with a medical check-up for the prevention of breast and gynecological cancer.

The North Face Transgrancanaria is once again actively involved in this charitable initiative. In 2022, the race donated 50% of the registration fees collected on World Breast Cancer Day to the Spanish Association Against Cancer, contributing to research on this and other oncological diseases and providing support to individuals with this diagnosis. For the 2024 edition, the joint effort with San Roque University Hospitals focuses on raising awareness about disease prevention.

The trail running race and its official healthcare sponsor will offer a medical check-up for breast and gynecological cancer prevention to the first Canarian female runner in the TGC Classic category. This check-up will include a gynecological consultation, cytology, vaginal ultrasound, mammography, breast ultrasound, and the delivery of results and a final report. The tests will be conducted at the San Roque University Hospitals facilities in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, a leading center for innovative healthcare on Gran Canaria and the only private hospital in the Canary Islands included in the ‘World’s Best Hospitals – 2023 – Spain’.

“Our goal is to emphasize prevention,” says Daida Tacoronte, Marketing Manager of San Roque University Hospitals. “Screening programs and advances in diagnostic tests and treatments have led to a high survival rate in breast cancer. That’s why we want to collaborate with this medical check-up for breast and gynecological cancer prevention,” she emphasizes. Tacoronte adds that it is “vital” for all women to “understand the importance of regular check-ups and early diagnosis.”

Wendy Cruz, Marketing Director of Arista Eventos, expresses the joy of the entire team that makes up The North Face Transgrancanaria for “collaborating once again with HUSR in breast cancer prevention.” “At Arista, we all agree on the importance of regular check-ups and early diagnosis, so we work hand in hand with the professionals at San Roque University Hospitals to spread this message directly through Transgrancanaria, which is one of the most international and impactful races in the Canary Islands,” she adds.

HUSR, the only private hospital in the Canary Islands with comprehensive services for women in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment

As recently detailed by Herminia Rodríguez, Vice President of San Roque University Hospitals, “one out of every eight women will develop breast cancer, with women aged 35 to 80, although the highest prevalence occurs between 45 and 65 years.” “According to data from the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology, 35,000 new cases of breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in 2023, making it the most common tumor among women in our country and the most diagnosed in the world,” she recalled. Herminia Rodríguez emphasized that “a very alarming fact is that 42% of women have not had a check-up in the last year.”

San Roque University Hospitals, the official healthcare sponsor of The North Face Transgrancanaria, is the only private hospital in the Canary Islands with a multidisciplinary tumor committee, digital subtraction mammography with contrast, and comprehensive services for women in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Additionally, they collaborate with various patient associations and charitable sports events, and their professionals actively participate in patient education programs and provide information to patients and their families about care during the oncological process.

The North Face Transgrancanaria is sponsored by the Gran Canaria Island Council through Gran Canaria Tourism Board, the Government of the Canary Islands through Canary Islands Latitude of Life, Maspalomas Costa Canaria, the Municipal Sports Institute of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and the Tejeda Town Hall, as well as the companies The North Face, Fred.
