The race will reinforce its commitment to conserving Gran Canaria’s natural environment through new measures aimed at reducing its environmental impact and moving towards an increasingly sustainable event model -The mountain race, in collaboration with the Canary Islands Government’s Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy, is the first sporting event registered in the Canary Carbon Footprint Registry
The North Face Transgrancanaria could not be understood without nature. For more than twenty years, thousands of runners have discovered Gran Canaria by covering historic trails, pine forests and laurel forests, ravines, summits and volcanic landscapes that make the island a unique setting for trail running.
Precisely because nature is at the heart of the event, the 2027 edition will mark the start of a new era under the slogan “Sustainable by Nature”. A philosophy born from a simple conviction: whoever enjoys nature also has the responsibility to protect it.
Sustainability will become a transversal strategic focus for the organization. The North Face Transgrancanaria will comprehensively analyze all of the event’s processes in order to continue reducing its environmental impact and move towards an increasingly efficient, responsible model that respects the territory that hosts it.
Carlos González, director of The North Face Transgrancanaria, explained that “‘Sustainable by nature’ is a way of understanding the present and future of our race”. “Transgrancanaria”, he continued, “exists thanks to nature and to the trails that run through some of the most spectacular spaces in Gran Canaria, so it is our duty to take ever better care of them and to make our impact on the environment ever smaller”.
González pointed out that “our goal is to review every detail of the organization to identify where we can improve; from mobility to aid stations, to the materials we use and waste management.” “We know there is no such thing as a perfect race or one that is one hundred percent sustainable, but there is a commitment to keep advancing, to measure our results and to keep incorporating actions that allow us to leave a positive legacy for Gran Canaria and for international trail running”, added the race director.
Mobility and energy efficiency
The work will cover aspects such as the mobility of the organization and participants, efficient energy and resource consumption, waste reduction and recycling, promoting the use of reusable containers at aid stations, the selection of more sustainable materials and suppliers, and the protection of the natural spaces through which the race passes.
The organization will also reinforce awareness-raising actions aimed at runners, companions, volunteers, sponsors, suppliers and spectators, promoting good practices that help conserve the trails, ecosystems and landscapes that make the event possible.
This strategy will be underpinned by ongoing analysis and continuous improvement. The North Face Transgrancanaria will continue to advance in calculating the event’s carbon footprint, incorporating both direct emissions and indirect emissions derived from transport, logistics and associated services, with the aim of identifying new opportunities for reduction and establishing indicators to measure progress in future editions.
Canary Carbon Footprint Registry
In this regard, the race has already taken a significant step by becoming the first sporting event registered in the Canary Carbon Footprint Registry, thanks to the support of the Canary Islands Government’s Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy. This pioneering initiative is currently underway and will allow the organization to keep refining the measurement of its environmental impact and to define new actions to minimize it.
With “Sustainable by Nature,” The North Face Transgrancanaria reaffirms that the future of trail running depends on caring for the spaces that give it meaning. Because covering nature also means getting to know it, appreciating it and conserving it so that future generations can continue to enjoy it.
Registration opens: July 1st
Registration for the 2027 edition will open on July 1st at 12:00 (Canary Islands time) through the event’s official website, www.transgrancanaria.net, with a 48-hour flash period at reduced prices. For this edition, the organization has decided to maintain the number of registered participants recorded last year, and even reduce it in some categories, in order to contribute to the sustainability and quality of the event.
