Traducción al Inglés Transgrancanaria Presents its Candidacy as an Event of Exceptional Public Interest The organisation of The North Face Transgrancanaria has submitted its application to the Spanish Sports Council (Consejo Superior de Deportes) to be recognised as an Event of Exceptional Public Interest (Acontecimiento de Excepcional Interés Público – AEIP), in recognition of its solid trajectory, its economic and tourist impact, and its international projection as one of the great reference sports events in Spain. The CEO of Arista Eventos, Fernando González, and the Minister of Sports of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria (Island Government), Aridany Romero, recently held a meeting at the headquarters of the Spanish Sports Council with its Director of the President’s Office, Juan Luis Soto, and Ana Ballesteros, representing the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (Real Federación Española de Atletismo), to present the candidacy. Romero celebrated « this new step forward taken by this race, a benchmark in the world of trail running and an element of promotion for sport, physical activity and the landscapes of our island. We will continue to support this event, which demonstrates the organisational capacity of Arista, and the synergy that has always been exemplary between public institutions, such as the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, and this company in the sector, a successful collaboration of which we are especially proud. » González, for his part, pointed out: « Achieving this recognition will contribute to further consolidating the event as the world’s leading ultra-trail race in the winter season, while also strengthening its role as a strategic tool for the projection of Gran Canaria, its economy, its landscapes and its values. » With more than two decades of history, Transgrancanaria has been a pillar in the promotion of nature sports and the Gran Canaria destination as an international hub for active tourism. Since its first edition in 2003, the race has continued to grow in the number of participants, media notoriety, and organisational professionalisation. Managed since its inception by Arista Eventos, a Canary Islands company specialising in the production of large-scale sporting events, the mountain ultra-distance race has been recognised for its operational excellence and its contribution to positioning the Islands as a territory for outdoor sports and sustainability. The economic impact of Transgrancanaria has been notable in recent years. In 2024, the race generated 22.6 million euros in economic return for the island, and its 2025 edition saw the participation of more than 5,300 runners from 70 countries. This event mobilises not only thousands of athletes but also their companions, technical teams, media, and sector professionals, directly impacting hotel occupancy, catering, transport, and local commerce. The race has also consolidated itself as an international dissemination platform for Gran Canaria with more than fifty journalists and graphic reporters from over a hundred countries, including Spain, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, and Switzerland. Furthermore, since 2024, the event has been integrated into the World Trail Majors, an international circuit that brings together the world’s best mountain races, further elevating its global prestige. At a sporting level, Transgrancanaria is an absolute benchmark in the international trail running calendar, with an increasingly large participation of elite and popular athletes. The recent opening of registration for the 2026 edition has confirmed this trend, with 6,000 bibs sold five months before the sporting event takes place, an unprecedented figure that demonstrates the loyalty and enthusiasm it arouses among the international trail running community. The request to be recognised as an Event of Exceptional Public Interest represents a strategic step to ensure the continuity, sustainable growth, and institutional projection of an event that not only promotes sport but also generates wealth, employment, and long-term visibility for Gran Canaria. The declaration as an AEIP would also allow for more effective channelling of public-private support and the articulation of new tools for promotion and development for the benefit of Canarian society as a whole.
